Part 2.....How the Instagram Algorithm work for Reels

Updated: Mar 14, 2023

Reels is designed to entertain, and the majority of Reels shown are from accounts you don’t necessarily follow. This is great news for creators wanting to broaden their reach and grow their account. However, if you are spending valuable time on creating a Reel that’s fun and engaging, you want to make sure it’s being discovered.

Instagram is being far more transparent about how the algorithm works and has shared some insights; for example, Reels which are low resolution, or recycled from other apps like TikToK, won’t be shown as frequently.

So, if you want to make sure your Reels are being discovered, follow the best practice guidelines direct from Instagram:

Brands and creators should create Reels that:

  • are fun & entertaining

  • are Inspiring i.e. starts a trend that others can easily participate in

  • use creative tools like text, filters or camera affects

  • use vertical video

  • use music from the Instagram music library and / or original audio you create or find on reels

  • are an experiment

Follow these tips and improve your chances of your Reels being discovered by a new audience. In addition, make sure you share your Reel to your main feed and include a caption and add relevant hashtags.

To avoid your Reel being deprioritized make sure:

  • it isn’t blurry due to low resolution

  • it isn’t visibly recycled from other apps

  • it isn’t uploaded with a border around it

  • most of the image isn’t covered by text

These types of Reels won’t be recommended as often to people who don’t follow you, in places like the Explore page and Reels tab.
